Researcher with extensive academic experience takes over leadership of the Center.

The Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE) has a new CEO. Physicist Anderson Gomes was appointed to the position today (27) by the institution's Board of Directors. The director was elected for a four-year term.
Gomes has served as director of CGEE since 2024, having been deputy secretary-general of the 5th National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation, held in the same year. Among other positions, he held the state secretariats of Education and of Science, Technology and Environment of Pernambuco. In addition, he was a designated member of the Technical-Scientific Council for Basic Education of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) and of the Board of Directors of the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT).
The new head of CGEE is also a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) since 2015, president of the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences (for the 2025-2027 term), and a member of The World Academy of Science (TWAS).
Academic trajectory
Anderson Stevens Leonidas Gomes completed his undergraduate and master's degrees in physics at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). He earned his doctorate in physics from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of London and completed his postdoctoral studies at Brown University. His scientific activities are in the areas of nanophotonics, biophotonics, nonlinear optics, and optical communications. He is co-author of more than 400 scientific articles and has supervised 45 master's dissertations and 37 doctoral theses.
He served as a full professor in the Department of Physics at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) from 1990 to 2023. Today he is a permanent member of the Graduate Programs in Physics and Dentistry at UFPE and a collaborator of the Graduate Program in Materials Science at the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (Univasf).
