Diretor do CGEE no International Workshop on Accelerating Materials & Human S&T for DoD and Space Missions
The director of the Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE), Anderson Gomes, participated in the International Workshop on Accelerating Materials & Human S&T for DoD and Space Missions , held from January 19 to 22 in Santiago, Chile. The meeting brought together international experts in materials science, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and strategic applications associated with the space and defense sectors.
In addition to attending the technical sessions, Gomes acted as organizer and speaker in the "Quantum Materials & Quantum Sensing" section, dedicated to quantum materials and quantum sensing. His participation reinforced the dialogue on scientific advancements, strategic applications, and international cooperation on priority topics for science, technology, and innovation.
During the program, Gomes presented the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA), a strategic initiative developed within the scope of the National Council for Science and Technology (CCT), coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and with technical support from CGEE. The plan guides the ethical, safe and sustainable development of artificial intelligence in Brazil and foresees investments of up to R$ 23 billion over four years.
The proposal was delivered to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the opening of the 5th National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation (5CNCTI) in July 2024, and has been used as a reference for federal government actions aimed at strengthening AI as a strategic driver of national development. Among the goals of the PBIA (Brazilian Program for the Enhancement of AI), the acquisition of a high-performance supercomputer stands out, with the potential to significantly expand Brazil's capacity for data processing and advanced research in the field.
In the same session, Gomes highlighted the final phase of developing the Brazilian Quantum Technologies Initiative, as well as the progress already driven by current calls for proposals focused on the area. The panel also included the participation of researcher Isabel Carvalho from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio, and researcher João Marcelo Silva from Senai-Cimatec, who presented the institution's Quantum Technologies program.
The workshop program was structured into four thematic days. On the first day, the meeting discussed strategic challenges in science and technology applied to the space and defense sectors. The second day focused on biotechnology and biomanufacturing of high-performance functional materials, highlighting the use of artificial intelligence and multiscale modeling in the discovery and development of new materials. The third day was dedicated to quantum materials and quantum sensing, while the fourth day addressed materials and electronics for space technologies and human performance in defense operations.
The event also included integrated debates, networking , and institutional collaboration among researchers, public administrators, and representatives of international organizations, strengthening CGEE's presence in international forums dedicated to advanced science, technological innovation, and public interest agendas related to scientific sovereignty.
