The inaugural event featured the lecture "The 110 Years of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences," given by physicist and science communicator Ildeu de Castro Moreira.
The President of the Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE), Anderson Gomes, participated, this Tuesday (28), in the opening of the celebrations of the 110 years of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). The program began with the seminar “ABC 110 Years: Legacy and Future”, which officially marks the institution's celebrations.
The president of the ABC, Helena B. Nader, highlighted the importance of the moment by inviting the scientific community and society to participate in the activities, which revisit the history of the Academy and outline its challenges for the future.
Also regional vice-president of the ABC and president of the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences (APC), Anderson Gomes highlighted the institution's historical role in the articulation between science, development and the formulation of public policies in Brazil.
"The trajectory of the ABC is deeply intertwined with the scientific and technological development of the country. More than a space of academic excellence, the Academy has been a qualified voice in defining national strategic agendas," he stated.
The inaugural event featured the lecture “The 110 Years of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences,” given by physicist and science communicator Ildeu de Castro Moreira. In his presentation, the academician highlighted historical milestones of the institution since its founding in 1916, emphasizing its role in defending science, participating in debates on national issues, and promoting research in the country.
For over a century, ABC has established itself as one of the leading institutions in the Brazilian scientific community, contributing to the training of researchers, the production of knowledge, and the strengthening of the national science, technology, and innovation system.
For Anderson Gomes, the celebration of the 110th anniversary also represents a moment of reaffirmation of science as a state policy. According to him, the Academy has played a relevant role in formulating proposals aimed at strengthening the sector's structure and expanding investments in science and technology.
“The convergence between knowledge production and strategic reflection, present in both the ABC and the CGEE, is fundamental to repositioning science at the center of the Brazilian development project. Celebrating the Academy's 110th anniversary is to renew the commitment to a future in which science is recognized as a structuring axis of sovereignty, innovation, and the quality of life of society,” he stated.
The program also included the presentation of the ABC José Murilo de Carvalho Memory Center, an initiative focused on preserving and disseminating the institution's collection. The project, carried out in partnership with the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences (MAST) and with support from Faperj, brings together documents, images, videos, and publications that record more than a century of the history of science in Brazil. The Center honors the historian José Murilo de Carvalho (1939–2023), a member of the ABC since 2003 and of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) since 2004. The initiative was developed by a group of academics led by Maria Vargas and Patricia Bozza, with the participation of researchers and specialists linked to the institution.
