The Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE) held, on May 20th, the Open Conference “CGEE 25 years: trajectories of Brazilian Science, Technology & Innovation in light of the SDGs”, an initiative integrated into the preparatory process for the 1st National Conference on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting brought together representatives of science, technology and innovation institutions from across the country and consolidated strategic proposals related to sustainable development, which will support the national stage of the conference.
Held in a synchronous virtual format via the Zoom platform, the conference had 140 registered participants and an average of approximately 110 people connected simultaneously throughout the program. The event exceeded the minimum number required for the approval of the open stages of the National SDG Conference and brought together representatives from approximately 48 national and international institutions linked to the agendas of science, technology, innovation, sustainability, social inclusion, and territorial development.
The discussions highlighted actions and studies developed by CGEE throughout its 25 years, aligned with themes later incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as environmental sustainability, territorial development, social inclusion, bioeconomy, and evidence-based public governance.
Throughout the program, the debates were organized into three thematic axes: formation and institutional consolidation of CGEE (2001–2010); expansion, territorialization and inclusion (2011–2019); and contemporary agenda and strategic challenges (2020–2025). The discussions addressed topics related to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, bioeconomy, climate sustainability, regional development, scientific capacity building, and strengthening evidence-based public policies.
During the conference, contemporary challenges in public governance and the articulation between science, innovation, and sustainable development were debated. Participants highlighted the importance of institutional cooperation, expanding regional capacities in science, technology, and innovation (ST&I), and strengthening strategic intelligence mechanisms aimed at government planning and public policy formulation.
As a result of the activity, six proposals related to the themes of the 1st National Conference on the SDGs were consolidated. Among the prioritized themes are the strengthening of sustainable bioeconomy policies, the expansion of strategies for the internalization of science and technology, the integration between scientific production and the formulation of public policies, the promotion of inclusion and diversity in the national scientific system, and the strengthening of national and international collaborative networks.
The conference was part of the commemorative activities for the 25th anniversary of CGEE and reinforced the institution's strategic role in producing prospective studies, evaluating public policies, and building agendas focused on the future of scientific, technological, and sustainable development in the country.
