The Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE) has released the Technical Note "Mapping of initiatives at the federal level related to Nature-based Solutions (NbS)," a document that systematizes and analyzes actions, programs, and public policies conducted by the federal government aimed at promoting urban sustainability and climate resilience in Brazil.
Nature-based solutions are strategies grounded in natural processes, capable of generating environmental, social, and economic benefits, while simultaneously strengthening the capacity to respond to challenges such as climate change, water resource management, and food security. Given the worsening of extreme weather events and increasing urban demands, this study highlights the importance of adopting hybrid solutions, which combine traditional gray infrastructure with nature-based solutions, as an essential path towards the development of more sustainable and resilient cities.
This Technical Note presents a comprehensive survey of federal initiatives related to Nature-based Solutions and Green Infrastructure, identifying the main institutional actors, programs, projects, and actions developed within the scope of direct and indirect public administration. The mapping offers a consolidated view of recent advances in the formulation and implementation of public policies aimed at building greener, more inclusive cities adapted to new climate realities.
This document is part of CGEE's ongoing effort to produce studies and guiding documents that support strategic public policies in the areas of Nature-based Solutions and hybrid infrastructures in urban environments. The initiative was developed in partnership with the Secretariat for Urban Environment, Water Resources and Environmental Quality of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), within the scope of an inter-institutional effort coordinated by the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
